Here are some key takeaways from the webinar hosts, Dina Glasofer and Dale Seabury:
K-12 independent schools offer numerous benefits and opportunities, not the least of which are small class sizes, deeply engaged faculty, a focus on educating the whole child, and terrific facilities and resources. In the last 18 months, applications to many private schools have increased as the pandemic has prompted a “flight to quality,” making the process more competitive. If your child is planning to apply to an independent school, we urge a thoughtful approach to examining the “fit” of the institution. Determining fit is crucial to a successful educational experience and a happy, thriving child.
How can you determine which school is right for your child? We suggest beginning with a thoughtful analysis of your son or daughter, targeted school research, creating a “must-have” list, conducting school research, and asking probing questions at admission events.
Once you’ve submitted the application components (such as test scores, essays, transcripts, and other supplementary materials), schools evaluate candidates in a holistic manner. The decision-making process is complex and personal, just like the application process! Above all, we draw upon our years of experience working as Admissions Officers and urge parents to look for ways to reduce stress while emphasizing the importance of balance to their children, approaching independent school admission as an opportunity to learn about themselves and explore new possibilities.
